In 2023, Humanities Guåhan was thrilled to announce our Community Grant Cycle, which offers non-profit organizations financial support for humanities programs that empower public audiences.

Thanks to our partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), we proudly supported cultural enrichment, community engagement, and critical conversations by providing financial assistance to local non-profit organizations. Grants of up to $15,000 were available for humanities programming.

All non-profit organizations in Guam were eligible to apply for these grants. The federal government established a new mandate on April 4, 2022, to replace the DUNS number by requiring that organizations obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) from the System for Award Management (SAM) by October 24, 2023.

The free Community Grant Workshop hosted on August 26, 2023 at the Humanities Guåhan office was an opportunity to learn about the application process and participate in activities designed to aid understanding of HG’s grantmaking process. The proposal deadline was September 30, 2023, and grant awards were announced on October 24, 2023, celebrating the vision and impact of successful applicants.

A $15,000 grant was awarded to the Guam Film Festival for "Haga’ yan Åcho' | Blood and Stone," a documentary film reviving the CHamoru tradition of slinging in the Marianas. The project will also include a public screening and discussion event.

Guåhan Sustainable Cultures (Oceanic Ascent Education, Inc.) received a $10,000 grant for a project integrating CHamoru language and culture into sustainability practices, with activities in a community garden, local food tasting, and reflective presentations and participation about food sovereignty and its cultural importance for our island community.

The University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences was awarded a $15,000 grant to develop a philosophy camp, "Our Island, Our Future." This camp provides a space for philosophical dialogue and contemplation among Guam's youth aged 8-18 based on the national initiative Philosophy for Children or P4C.

Eligible humanities programs include lectures, seminars, conferences, workshops, discussion series, panel discussions, exhibits, fairs, festivals, tours, and media productions. We also encourage innovative formats that foster discussions among diverse audiences.

At Humanities Guåhan, we celebrate various humanities studies, including history, languages, literature, law, philosophy, religion, ethics, and art criticism. Our interdisciplinary approach embraces Pacific, CHamoru, Micronesian, Asian, American, women and gender, ethnic studies, folklore, and more, welcoming projects that apply these perspectives to contemporary issues.
