About Humanities Guåhan
Founded in 1991 by a dedicated group of citizens from Guåhan, Humanities Guåhan is a federally recognized non-profit organization affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), an independent federal agency. Our organization is committed to enhancing and promoting public humanities programming with the people of Guåhan, creating foundational support and educational assets for the island's people.
Our Mission
Humanities Guåhan's mission is to foster community engagement and dialogue, inspire critical thinking, celebrate diversity and enrich the quality of life for island residents through the power of the humanities. To achieve these aims, we organize and support a broad spectrum of public humanities programs. These include interpretative exhibitions, family literacy initiatives, a community grants program, community conversations, documentary screenings and dialogues, workshops for educators and students, literary and food democracy tours, as well as cultural workshops and performances.
Our Vision
Humanities Guåhan envisions a future where the rich historical, cultural, and social fabric of Guåhan, in particular, the Indigenous knowledge of CHamoru and Micronesian peoples, are celebrated and preserved for upcoming generations. We provide a platform for reflection, conversation, idea exchange, and ongoing learning on critical issues facing our community, all contributing to the enhancement of our island and its people.

Our Commitment to
Justice & Equality
In today's world, where the quest for justice and equality is more urgent than ever, Humanities Guåhan stands committed to being a catalyst for change. We believe that in a diverse society, equality is a tangible reality, not just an ideal, and forms the foundation of a just community. We stand by the need to address ongoing global events, including #BlackLivesMatter and #StopAsianHate, that have underscored the critical need to address and confront institutional oppression and injustice in all its forms. Our role in the humanities is pivotal in this endeavor. By fostering dialogue, self-inquiry, self-examination, and community connections, we are constantly striving to elevate diverse perspectives and histories. Our array of public programs – from community conversations to literacy initiatives and youth engagement – are designed to break down barriers and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared humanity. At Humanities Guåhan, we are not just observers but active participants in shaping a just and equitable world, both within Guåhan and beyond.
